Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) recently conducted its first overseas company profile seminar for the local media in the Philippines as part of its goal to strengthen business in the country.
Led by MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, the company presented its Blue Action 2035 management plan which aim to continue to contribute to the region by strengthening both shipping and non-shipping businesses in the Philippines, by training seafarers, and by serving its regional strategy.
MOL Corporate Communication Division General Manager Yosuke Ishibe opened the seminar with an introduction of the MOL Group's global business and environmental initiatives, followed by a presentation from Yasunori Takamatsu, Chief Country Representative for the Philippines. Takamatsu introduced MOL’s shipping and non-shipping businesses in the Philippines, its relationship with Filipino seafarers, and other aspects of the group’s deep connection with the country.
He noted that majority of the seafarers serving aboard MOL-operated vessels are Filipinos.
He said that the Philippines is the foundation for the safe, reliable operation of the MOL Group fleet. In addition, he pointed out that MOL manages the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Inc., (MMMA), a merchant marine academy, with its valued partner, the Magsaysay Group. In addition to training new Filipino seafarers, MOL and Magsaysay jointly operate training centers for current seafarers to upgrade their qualifications.
“The Philippines is a very important stakeholder for the MOL Group, both in terms of business and ship operations,” Takamatsu said. He said there are 6000 seafarers at MOL vessels, and this number could go up to 20,000 including all the Filipinos serving the chartered vessels. He added that of the 6000 officials at MOL, 2000 of them are Filipinos.
Jesse Ho Maxwell, President and CEO of Magsaysay Shipping & Logistics, expressed hopes to further strengthen the partnership that has existed since 1964. To date, MOL has partnered only with Filipino seafarers through the MMMA, a four-year merchant marine academy and boarding school located in Dasmariñas City, Cavite.
Headquartered in Tokyo, MOL is a leading shipping company with the world’s second-largest fleet of about 900 vessels and the largest LNG fleet globally.
MOL’s fleet includes dry bulkers, LNG carriers, car carriers, container ships, and tankers. In addition to the traditional shipping business, it is also developing social infrastructure businesses such as container terminals, logistics, and offshore wind power, as well as wellbeing life businesses such as real property, cruises, and ferries.
